Main activities

• Building-up and preservation of library collections in accordance with the library specialization

At present the library holdings contain more than 372, 000 library stock units – monographs, periodicals, special literature (technical standards, final theses, and dissertations) from the spheres of forestry, wood technology, ecology, environmental and manufacturing technologies, natural and social sciences, and related disciplines. Besides classical methods of acquisition, the Library actively exchanges the publications, it keeps in contact with about 100 institutions from various countries all over the world.

• Building-up and providing an access to the library professional databases

As the only one in the Slovak Republic, the Library produces the specialised databases concerning the questions of forestry, wood sciences, ecology, environmental sciences, and related scientific disciplines (Database of Documents, Database of Authorities). All databases produced in the Library are accessible through the online catalogue on the library website.
The Library also participates in the producing the AGRIS/CARIS/FAO databases.

• Providing an access to the external electronic information resources

The Library provides an access also to the external databases and electronic information resources. At present, the following databases are licensed: CAB Abstracts database, Web of Science, Scopus, JSTOR – Ecology & Botany Collection, SpringerLink, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online Library, ProQuest Central, Knovel and the Electronic Journals Library (EZB).

• Building-up the Database of the Technical University Publication Activity including citation index

Registration of publications and citations of the Technical University teachers and researchers, producing the Database of the Technical University Publication Activity, including citation index, is one of the prior activities of the Library. Upon request, the Library provides outputs from these databases.

• Providing all types of library and information services with the support of modern information technologies under conditions of the international standards

At present, the library services are fully automated. The Library uses the Advanced Rapid Library system, an integrated library-information multi-user online system with the possibility of multimedia connecting to the university network and the Internet. Besides lending services, the Library provides inter-library and international inter-library loans, searching services, document delivery services, consulting and advisory services, and reprographic services. The access to library holdings is provided by the Internet Public Access Catalogue.

• Supporting information literacy of the Technical University students

The Library organizes professional presentations, lectures and training courses in the field of utilizing electronic information resources and library-information services.

• Other activities

The Library organizes various professional events, lectures, seminars; presentations of scholarship programmes (in cooperation with the Slovak Academic Information Agency) etc.

• Cooperation and membership

In fulfilling its mission, the Library cooperates with many Slovak and foreign libraries, information institutions, universities as well as with professional institutions and research institutes working in the fields of forestry, ecology, environmental sciences, wood sciences and technology. The Library is a member of the Slovak Library Association.
